The Budapest Academic Freedom Initiative holds its first project workshop on the 13th of October 2026, at the premises of ELTE Centre for Social Sciences (1097 Budapest, Tóth Kálmán utca 4). The project is supported by Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin and funded by the VolkswagenStiftung and the Marga and Kurt Möllgaard-Stiftung and is carried out in 2026-2028. As part of the project, workshops on the topic of academic freedom will be held in every academic semester. The first workshop is entitled ‘Whose Academic Freedom Is It Anyway?’, and it is focused on the normative frameworks of academic freedom and autonomy within a post-authoritarian context. Besides that, participants will discuss the transformation of Hungarian foundation-based and public universities, as well as that of the academic research network. Presentations on the situation in the academic sectors of Albania, Georgia, Montenegro and Italy will be also heard. The workshop is open to all interested colleagues. BAFI is coordinated and the workshop is organized by Zoltán Ádám, Senior Research Fellow of the Institute for Political Science at ELTE CSS (adam.zoltan@tk.elte.hu).
