Ana Stojilovska, Senior Research Fellow at PTI, published a book chapter about gendered energy poverty in the International Handbook of Women and Poverty by Bloomsbury Academic:
The book chapter examines how overlapping crises deepen women’s energy poverty in North Macedonia. It introduces “multiple energy vulnerability” to explain how energy hardship intersects with difficulties affording transport, healthcare, food and other essentials. Even educated, employed women experience financial insecurity and stress, often sacrificing basic needs to afford energy. The chapter calls for integrated policies addressing energy affordability, insecure employment, inadequate social protection, and gender inequality.
The collaboration began after expressing interest in a call for essays from around the world to explore the dynamics of women and poverty in their country, highlighting local social justice initiatives to combat the feminization of poverty. The book consists of 26 chapters from 17 countries/territories examining women’s poverty through diverse but interconnected issues, including structural and intersectional inequalities, energy and housing poverty, care, labor and economic insecurity, education, reproductive health, marriage, violence and exploitation, climate and crisis, ageing, and rural/urban marginalization. An earlier version of the chapter was presented at the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) General Conference in Prague in 2023.
